Have You Heard of the 3 Traditional Promises of St. Michael’s Chaplet?

The Chaplet of Saint Michael the Archangel: Its Meaning, Traditional Promises, and How to Pray

Introduction: A Powerful Prayer to the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts

In times of fear, temptation, uncertainty, and spiritual struggle, many Catholics turn to Saint Michael the Archangel, the great defender of God's people.

Known as the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, Saint Michael reminds us that evil does not have the final word. Our strength comes from God, and through prayer, we can ask for His grace to remain faithful, resist temptation, and persevere in the journey toward Heaven.

One traditional Catholic devotion honoring this great archangel is the Chaplet of Saint Michael. Through nine salutations dedicated to the nine choirs of angels, this chaplet invites the faithful to reflect on God's glory, the holiness of the heavenly hosts, and our own calling to live a life pleasing to Him.

But what are the traditional promises associated with this devotion, and how should Catholics understand them?

What Is the Chaplet of Saint Michael?

The Chaplet of Saint Michael is a traditional Catholic prayer devotion associated with a reported private revelation received by the Portuguese Carmelite nun Antónia d'Astónaco.

According to the traditional account, Saint Michael asked to be honored through nine salutations, each corresponding to one of the nine choirs of angels.

Each salutation includes a petition for a particular grace through the intercession of Saint Michael and the angels, followed by one Our Father and three Hail Marys.

The devotion helps Catholics contemplate the heavenly order of angels while asking God for the virtues needed in daily life, including charity, humility, obedience, perseverance, and protection against temptation.

The chaplet has been promoted in Catholic devotional tradition for generations. As with other private revelations, however, its reported supernatural origin and associated promises should be distinguished from the truths of the Catholic faith.

The Three Traditional Promises Associated With the Chaplet

Traditional accounts of the reported revelation associate the Chaplet of Saint Michael with three special benefits. These are best understood as devotional promises attributed to the revelation, not as a guarantee that every person who prays the chaplet will experience particular events.

1. The Assistance of Angels When Approaching Holy Communion

According to the traditional account, Saint Michael promised an escort of nine angels, one chosen from each of the nine choirs, for those who practice this devotion as they approach Holy Communion.

This promise invites us to consider the sacredness of receiving Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

When we prepare to receive Communion, we should approach Our Lord with faith, reverence, humility, and a heart ready to welcome Him. The chaplet can help us remember that the Mass is not an ordinary gathering but a sacred encounter with Christ.

Rather than treating this promise as a guarantee of an extraordinary experience, let it inspire you to prepare your soul for Holy Communion and receive the Eucharist with deeper love.

2. Spiritual Assistance and Protection Throughout Life

The second traditional promise speaks of the continuing assistance of Saint Michael and the holy angels during earthly life.

Life brings many struggles. We encounter temptations, discouragement, difficult decisions, family concerns, and moments when our faith is tested.

Praying the Chaplet of Saint Michael can remind us to seek God's help in these situations. We can ask for protection from evil, wisdom in making decisions, courage to do what is right, and strength to remain faithful when life becomes difficult.

Catholic devotion to Saint Michael does not mean that Christians will never experience suffering or danger. Rather, it encourages us to place our trust in God, who remains with us even during trials.

The greatest protection we seek is not simply freedom from every hardship, but the grace to remain close to God and faithful to Him.

3. Hope for the Final Journey Toward Heaven

The third traditional promise concerns assistance after death and deliverance from Purgatory for the devotee and their family.

Purgatory, according to Catholic teaching, is the final purification of those who die in God's grace and friendship but still need purification before entering the perfect holiness of Heaven.

This teaching gives Catholics hope in God's mercy and reminds us to pray for the faithful departed.

The promise associated with the chaplet should not be understood as an automatic exemption from purification or as a guarantee that family members will enter Heaven simply because someone has prayed a particular devotion.

Our hope rests in Jesus Christ, whose saving grace makes eternal life possible. We are called to repent, receive the sacraments, practice charity, persevere in faith, and entrust ourselves and our loved ones to God's mercy.

Praying for our family is an act of love. We should continue to pray for their conversion, salvation, and perseverance in the faith, trusting God rather than relying on a formula.

The Nine Choirs of Angels and Their Spiritual Meaning

The Chaplet of Saint Michael honors the traditional nine choirs of angels:

  1. Seraphim — remind us of burning love for God.
  2. Cherubim — inspire us to seek divine wisdom and turn away from sin.
  3. Thrones — call us to humility before God's majesty.
  4. Dominions — encourage us to govern our desires according to God's will.
  5. Virtues — remind us to seek strength to resist temptation and persevere in goodness.
  6. Powers — call us to remain vigilant against evil.
  7. Principalities — encourage obedience to God's order and guidance.
  8. Archangels — inspire perseverance in faith and good works.
  9. Angels — remind us to seek God's protection throughout life and on our journey toward eternity.

These reflections give the nine salutations a practical purpose. They encourage us not only to ask for help but also to grow in holiness.

How to Pray the Chaplet of Saint Michael

You can pray the chaplet using a traditional Saint Michael chaplet or follow a printed prayer guide.

Begin with the Sign of the Cross.

Pray the opening invocation:

O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me.

Then pray the Glory Be.

Pray the nine salutations.

For each salutation, meditate on one of the nine choirs of angels and ask for the grace associated with it. Traditionally, each salutation is followed by one Our Father and three Hail Marys.

Pray the four concluding Our Fathers.

These are offered in honor of Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, Saint Raphael, and your Guardian Angel.

Finish with the traditional concluding prayers.

Ask Prayer to Saint Michael to intercede for you, defend you against evil, and help you remain faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church. Conclude with the Sign of the Cross.

You may pray the chaplet daily if you wish, but remember that the purpose of devotion is to draw closer to God, not merely to complete a set number of prayers.

Is the Chaplet an Officially Approved Catholic Devotion?

The Chaplet of Saint Michael is a longstanding Catholic devotion promoted by Catholic devotional organizations and prayer resources.

However, it is important to distinguish the Church's acceptance or encouragement of a devotional practice from a declaration that every reported private revelation or associated promise is guaranteed.

The reported promises connected with the chaplet belong to the tradition surrounding the private revelation attributed to Antónia d'Astónaco. They should not be presented as doctrines of the Catholic faith.

Likewise, historical indulgence grants associated with the devotion should not automatically be assumed to remain in force today. The Church revised its discipline on indulgences, including through Pope Paul VI's apostolic constitution Indulgentiarum Doctrina and the subsequent Enchiridion of Indulgences.

For current indulgence rules, Catholics should consult reliable Church sources or ask a priest.

A Prayer for Protection Through the Intercession of Saint Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel, faithful servant of God and defender against evil, pray for us.

Help us remain courageous when we face temptation, humble when we receive God's blessings, and steadfast when our faith is tested.

Through your intercession, may we grow in love for Jesus Christ, remain faithful to His Church, and seek God's will in everything we do.

Pray for our families, our homes, and all those who are struggling spiritually. Help us remember that our true strength comes from God alone.

May we live each day in His grace and remain hopeful of the eternal joy He has prepared for those who love Him.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Amen.

Final Reflection: Pray With Faith, Not Fear

The Chaplet of Saint Michael invites us to remember the reality of spiritual struggle and the importance of remaining close to God.

Its nine salutations can become a daily opportunity to examine our hearts, ask for God's grace, resist sin, and grow in Christian virtue.

We do not pray because we can control the future through a particular devotion. We pray because we love God, need His mercy, and desire to remain faithful to Him.

May the example of Saint Michael inspire us to stand firm in the truth, reject evil, and trust in the victory of Jesus Christ.

Saint Michael the Archangel, pray for us!
